A staggering 8 tonnes of plastic makes its way into Oceans every year. As well as injuring fish, seabirds and marine mammals, plastic pollution threatens food safety, human health and climate change.
Plastic is an extremely popular eyewear material, mainly because it produces light weight and comfortable frames. The versatility of plastic also means that we can get varying colours and styles of glasses, allowing for everyone to find their perfect statement. However, the wasteful manufacturing process of plastic frames is rarely considered. Eyewear frames are cut from sheets of material, and once cut, 80% of the plastic sheet is thrown to waste.
In comes Sea2See. An Italian and Swiss based company, who rather than producing glasses, aims to produce a "statement of change". Sea2See sees the plastic that contaminates our Oceans as raw material. Abandoned fishnets, ropes, lines and bottles are collected and passed through an 8 step process to create premium, sustainable eyewear. With sustainability in the eyewear industry being somewhat nonexistent, Sea2See leads the change.
